First of all, I would like to say thank you, and congratulations, for the fantastic initiative of making available to us the 2 books (audio and synth). I had the opportunity to acquire both books, and with Rackafx I am able to study your projects as well as to develop my own plugins.
I'm currently working on a synth that requires 1 kick button (from the GUI) that will trigger a sample-playback oscillator (from your synth book). But the only sources I got with a triggering method from the UI use other type of synths (Direct and WT), from your other book (audio) that would fit a dx-like-synth which is wt based. I have been trying to adapt the projects from wt to a sample-playback based one, and copy the method (applying the check update and the assignable button, and process audio frame ( with "dovoice"instead of "dooscillator" to the synth.cpp/h. files of my synth, while still keeping the note on/off in the "dovoice" of the voice.h file of my synth. Not using the cooking frequency, because I assume I need a sample osc Id for the sample, not for the direct osc. For the same reason, Im not using a MidiNote knob neither, only the assignable button ( will I need the midi button for sample based osc?). About the assignable buttons Note on/off. I can read the state of the buttons, I update the osc id, I reset the oscillator and set the flag on. But it does not work. (The sample osc will launch only when I press your virtual keyboard or my external midi controller). Please, what am I missing? Maybe not doable with sample osc, or maybe note on/off are not enough to trigger a sample oscillator without a midinote knob? The only other way around that I see now, would be to move on and adopt a larger scenario, and I have been studying the delegate method/NoteXpress+Keyboardview that comes with the VSt3. But this is way too far from my need now and will require much more time. Please, I just want to know if this is possible with Rackafx so we could make a simple kick button triggers a simple note mimicking a midi message from a virtual keybrd via UI ( using customVSTGUI ?). If this is not possible with a Kick Button and custom VSTGUI, please let me know how to put together the keyboardview with Custom VSTGUI ( as an advanced GUI example. It will be much more harder, but if this is the only way, then I will try. Any help will be great. Thanks in advance !!
I have not experimented with the new VSTGUI keyboard view object though there is an example of it in the note-expression-synth sample code with the VST3 SDK.
Using a button on the GUI to trigger a sample can certainly be done, but I would not try to generate MIDI messages with it, which is how the synth code is all set up to handle it. You'd have to get the update from the GUI and then send MIDI to the host, which would then come back?
But you could internally do it, by calling your own MIDI note message functions directly. With all the APIs, any GUI control *must* have some link to the underlying parameter objects so you'd have to treat the kick button as a typical parameter, then call your own MIDI messages from it, or some similar strategy to mimic the note-on and note-off gating that is used in the synth book projects.
