What do you mean by "load 18 PNG files" -- is this just 18 user-PNGs, or does this involve custom views or other uses?
The short answer is that there is no limit in RackAFX/Visual Studio, but there is a limit of 256 PNG files for your exported projects -- so far, no one has requested more than 256, which seems like a reasonable limit.
There is no other way to add images other than the .RC in Visual Studio (for RackAFX or any other software) - the RC resources are compiled into your plugin via the RC file.
RackAFX itself is compiled with VS2015 and uses the same .RC mechanism, and VSTGUI4 for the main UI as well as the GUI Designer - it has about 125 PNG files in the RC file, available at any time (think GUI Designer) and you can see that there are about 150 or so various VSTGUI controls on the main UI too.
I followed the video on adding .PNG and was having no problems, until the beginning of this week.
If I add my .PNG's to the .rc file my .dll will not load into Rackafx. I didn't know if I was creating problems with the amount resource's I am using.
Maybe it's my compiler?
There is an error when loading my .dll in Rackafx but no problems within Ableton. That is a work around for now.
There is no real limit to the amount of resources your visual studio project uses, unless you run out of RAM or disk space, which is very rare.
And, on the grand scale of things, your plugin project code is tiny compared to full blown applications like RackAFX, so something is probably amiss with your coding. I've sent your email to a RackAFX consultant - one of my former students who is a very brilliant programmer and engineer; hopefully he can help you fix this.
