Hello RAFX users, hello Will,

since today, when trying to open RackAFX, i get the error message "Cannot initialize the Port Audio System". I didnt change anything since yesterday as i remember...

Reinstalling RackAFX didn't solve the problem.
I'm using version

Does anyone know what to do?

Thanks and regards,

Hi Jannik

This error is coming from the Port Audio subsystem initialization that occurs when RackAFX starts up; PortAudio is a 3rd party library I use for the audio I/O component in RackAFX; it is not coming from RackAFX directly, so reinstalling it would not help. There is something going on with your audio in Windows, maybe you got one of those automatic updates (if on Win7).

Audacity also uses Port Audio so you should get a similar error when using it (Audacity is free). There have been issues with that on Windows 10 though many of my students use Win10 with no problems.

I wish I could help further but there's nothing in the RackAFX code that would be able to fix this - I would check the audio driver setup in Windows and use google to search for Audacity + Portaudio to see how others have fixed that issue.

Also, if you are able to keep RackAFX open, then you might want to check the Audio/MIDI -> Setup Audio Devices to see if any devices are listed in the I/O boxes. In one case, a user had a newly built PC that did not yet have the audio subsystem setup yet and he had a similar problem, which went away after getting that setup in the Control Panel.

Hil Will,

thanks for your quick answer.
I figured out the error myself: There was an issue with the driver of my soundcard. There was no audio at all.
But good to know that Audacity uses Port Audio, too! I will test that, if the error occurs again.
