I was using a single filter to process the left and right channel for a while. I realize now that you will need separate filter objects for the left and right channels. Is this the correct way to go about it?

Yes; you can not share objects or memory locations z^-1 across channels. You have to double everything up. LPF1_Left, LPF1_Right, etc... The reason we are sticking to mono with these projects is that the synthesizer voice will be mono and only get panned to stereo in the end. When we get to sample-based synths, we'll run in stereo since the samples will almost always be sterep.
