I've made a wave shaper with a hard clip functionality.
When I try it on the master channel, I see that the bass frequencies of kick are being distorted badly when the hard clip occurs.
But comparing to most of the saturation plugins, this bass frequencies sound better. Even there is a hard clip, the bass frequencies are not being distorted as bad as like mine (Yes they use hard clipping too).
So what is the tip for this? I am sure they are doing before the wave shaper or control it according to the input frequencies.
Split the signal into low and high frequency bands and then distort the high frequencies, and blend back in the lows. This type of splitting is covered in several sections of my 2nd edition FX plugin programming book: the Bass Chorus (15.5.3) and the 2-band Spectral Dynamics Processor (18.5). These use the Linkwitz-Riley filters that are documented in section 11.3.2.6.
