In Ableton there are several devices that either output MIDI values only, or take MIDI values in and output MIDI values.

This type of plugin would have to be placed on a MIDI track in a DAW before an instrument. I know DAWs can be picky about where you place a VST in the signal chain based on the VST's application.

Has anyone created anything that allows you to place the VST where I have described to alter MIDI inputs? This would allow me to create some sort of sequencer for MIDI.

Is it possible to create MIDI-only plugins with RackAFX?

RackAFX is full MIDI-ized for input. It can receive all MIDI messages and can be used to make synthesizer plug-ins too. You can also use MIDI for controlling an audio effect plug-in's real-time parameters. However, it does not transmit MIDI information as of yet (I may add this over the summer). If you use the Make VST Compatible feature, the resulting VST will behave the same way, sinking MIDI messages.

In your plug-in's .h file you can see the MIDI message functions; they are lumped together:

midiNoteOn()

midiNoteOff()

midiPitchBend()

midiModWheel()

midiClock()

midiMessage() <- all midiMessages, unfiltered

If you'd like a simple synth example using RackAFX let me know.

Marko

In VST3 you can now make a plug-in that will sink and source MIDI and can be a MIDI effect or mixed MIDI/Audio effect. I don't think this is possible in VST2 (now obsolete anyway...). You set up a Plug-In with a MIDI input bus and MIDI output bus; you can then manipulate the MIDI signal. Disclaimer: I have not tried this personally.
