I downloaded the template synth from this website but for some reason I cannot open the .sln to change the contents from "templatesynth" to "nanosynth" (as mentioned in page 737, item number 6.). I suppose "cannot open" is a bit of a wrong phrase to use. I can open the file, and visual studio opens up but then this error message shows up and nothing else:

"C:\VST_SDK\VST3_SDK\base\win\base.vcxproj : error : The project file could not be loaded. Could not find a part of the path 'C:\VST_SDK\VST3_SDK\base\win\base.vcxproj'. C:\VST_SDK\VST3_SDK\base\win\base.vcxproj"

I found brief mentions of the base library project (in chapter 2) which I believe this error is refering to, however, I can't find it in any of the downloads provided on this site or on steinbergs site.

I'm trying to follow the vst3 coding instructions to build the nanosynth but I can't finish renaming the template synth files without actually opening the solution, which I cannot do because of the missing base library. I feel like I must be missing something super obvious here but I can't figure out where the base library is located. Do I have to code my own? I have found a folder labled "base" in both my "VST3_SDK" and "pluginterfaces" folders but they don't have the base.vcxproj files in them.

I think I figured it out. Watching this was immensely helpful. Thanks!

Glad you got it figured out.

I found brief mentions of the base library project (in chapter 2) which I believe this error is refering to, however, I can't find it in any of the downloads provided on this site or on steinbergs site.

At the time the book was published, the VST3 SDK was on 3.6.5 or 3.6.6. At this time, the base library was a separate project that was compiled independently as a separate product. With SDK 3.6.8, they rolled the library into the VST3 projects in a different manner. This is also when they started using CMake and did a massive restructuring of the sample projects.

I resisted both CMake and their new VST3 project structure until 3.6.9 came out, at which point I decided to embrace CMake and use it for all of my RackAFX exported projects - wow, it really cleaned things up and it also meant that I did not need to ship the project files anymore (massively problematic as there are minute differences between versions of VS). However, these differences have caused issues with the synth book (note a similar thing happened when Apple changed one of its macro function definitions - there is a forum thread on that as well - this made the book code not match up properly).
