Hey Will / guys,

I want to know if any of you guys have links/resources on how to implement a tape saturation algorithm.

Thanks very much!

Hi Alex

The book DAFX 2nd Edition has an excellent though short section on tape saturation in Chapter 12 (around page 512) as well as copious references for that chapter. You should also check the Audio Engineering Society (AES) library for papers - many of them are freely available if you search for them.

All the best,

Hi Will,

Thanks for your quick response!, I was looking into those pages (512-513) and looks like the transfer function to achieve the tape saturation is the erf(x) [Error function], now I was wondering about:

1) Which thing could be better? the use of stl::erf(x) as a transfer function, any of the aproximations showed in the wikipedia page or a taylor approximation around 0 computed in MATLAB?

2) Do I need to do pre/post filtering to improve the tape saturation?

3) Do I need to do oversampling to avoid aliasing or is this saturation very mild?

Thanks Will, waiting for the second book! Laugh
